The risk of acid rain and respiratory illnesses has led the federal government to introduce draft laws reducing the amount of sulphur ships can have in their fuel.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has introduced legislation aimed at keeping Australia up to date with international obligations around shipping oil.

The changes will ensure Australia complies with new global limits on sulphur levels in fuel that ships can both use and carry.
